Fifer for Philander

16 12 2011

If there is a cricketer more deserving of a terrific start to his international career, let me know. SA pacer Vernon Philander has set the international scene alight, claiming his third fifer in as many tests. Many ask where he has been – the answer is “dominating the SA domestic scene.”

It has always been of much confusion to followers of the franchise scene why Vernon hadn’t ever been given a chance in Tests. He has always been treated unfairly – he got given a chance in a few ODIs where he was decidedly average and was never again considered until recently. His statistics clearly show that he is a different player in the longer format – he averages under 20 with the ball in FC in comparison to his 35.31 in one dayers.

That said, Vernon is only 26 and still has about ten years left in him – enough time for him to establish himself as an international cricketing star.

As an aside, a lovely quote:

“He’s a nice guy – he would try hit you on the head with a bouncer but he doesn’t want to bowl beamers.”

Neil Johnson after Dilhara Fernando bowls a beamer to Philander.
